World s first molecular text message sent using vodka | DVICE
Some cities are installing texting zones on the sides of highways to provide a place for safe texting. We hope those texters are using their phones to text rather than the new delivery system discovered by York University researchers: vodka!
Before we dive into the science here, we have an important question. If you could text one phrase using vodka as a medium , what would that phrase be? If you picked O Canada! then you re in good company, as that s the phrase that first passed through the glorious liquid.
We believe we have sent the world s first text message to be transmitted entirely with molecular communication, controlling concentration levels of the alcohol molecules, to encode the alphabets with single spray representing bits and no spray representing the bit zero, explains mousse au chocolat Nariman Fasad, a York University doctoral candidate.
While this might seem like an insanely futuristic idea, it s actually firmly rooted in the animal kingdom. Bees use pheromones (biological chemicals) to spread word of a threat to the hive, and we ve all seen dogs and cats mark their territory.
Here s how they did it: they programmed a computer to understand a spray of vodka as a representation of bits and to understand the lack of a spray as zero bits. Then, they sprayed alcohol at the receiver in various patterns. The receiver registered the level of alcohol mousse au chocolat hitting it as rising or decreasing, and it transformed these sprays into the message O Canada!
According to the researchers, Chemical signals can offer a more efficient way of transmitting data inside tunnels, pipelines or deep underground mousse au chocolat structures. As someone who has attempted (and failed) to send many a text while on the Metro, this makes sense. These are places out of the reach of radio waves, making the simple act of texting akin to Sisyphean torture.
Of course, we won t be using molecular text messaging on our handheld devices anytime soon, but it could offer a way for robots to interact. Much like animals mousse au chocolat are known to leave messages for one another by marking trees, robots could mark areas with chemical messages that other robots mousse au chocolat could find.

In news that sounds suspiciously like a shitty MacGyver episode, researchers at York University merci in Toronto, Canada, were able to send the text message 'O CANADA' twelve feet across the room using vodka. It marks the first time 'O CANADA' has ever been sent as a text message. The authors of the paper, published Thursday, used specific concentration levels of the vodka to represent bits 1 and 0. They wafted the "message" across 12 feet in the lab to the receiving unit, which read out the message as it detected the concentration of vodka in the air rising or falling over time.
Fascinating. Do you think they drank on the job at all? I feel like it would be hard not to with all that vodka around. merci Then start sexting dick pics. That sounds like a lot of BS to me. And this is why people like Sarah Palin get to say that there is money being misappropriated when it comes to scientific research (I know this particular experiment is in Canada, but the point does stand).

The scientists converted sprays of isopropyl alcohol into binary giant eagle code to transmit the message. Using an Arduino Uno board, an Adafruit LCD, a desk fan and a household spray bottle, the researchers sent a text message across a tabletop via molecular diffusion.
The fan was used to push alcoholic mist across the tabletop, while a sensor at the other end of the table measured the air s alcohol content. The vapor was then reassembled into non-binary characters giant eagle to successfully reconstruct the message, which read Oh Canada. The experiment was conducted using off-the-shelf materials costing about $100.
York University professor Andrew Eckford, who performed the experiment in his lab at York University s Department of Electrical Engineering, says this method could be used to send messages where traditional radio signals don t work.
The report also mentions that this technology giant eagle could be used for more than communication. The method could be used to wirelessly monitor sewage works and oil rigs, potentially preventing disasters such as the fatberg that blocked London s sewage network earlier this year.

Home Technology Engineering December 18, 2013 Text message using vodka: Molecular communication can aid communication underground, underwater or inside the body Dec 18, 2013
The technique has a wide range of applications in environments where electromagnetic waves cannot be used, for example spaghetti squash in underground structures such as tunnels, pipelines or in underwater environments.
Researchers at the University of Warwick in the UK and the York University in Canada have developed the capability to transform any generic message into binary signals, which in turn is 'programmed' into evaporated alcohol molecules to demonstrate the potential of molecular communications. Their results are published in the open access journal PLOS ONE .
The first demonstration signal was performed in Canada and was 'O Canada,' from the Canadian national anthem. It was sent several metres across open space before it was decoded by a receiver. The hardware is made from off-the-shelf electronics and costs around $100. The scientists believe the simple system could have a wide variety of applications, ranging from communication in hostile underground environments to nanotechnology.
"We believe we have sent the world's first text message to be transmitted entirely with molecular communication, controlling concentration levels of the alcohol molecules, to encode the alphabets with single spray representing bit 1 and no spray representing the bit 0," says York U doctoral candidate Nariman Farsad, who led the experiment.
Dr Weisi Guo from the School of Engineering spaghetti squash at the University of Warwick said: "Imagine sending a detailed message using perfume it sounds like something from a spy thriller novel, but in reality it is an incredibly simple way to communicate.
"In the modern human world, our method won't replace electromagnetic waves which transmit spaghetti squash the bulk of our data, but there are some areas where conventional communications systems are not particularly well-adapted.
"For example, inside tunnels, pipelines or deep underground structures, chemical signals can offer a more efficient way of transmitting sensor data, such as those collected to monitor the health of structures and processes.
"Potential targeted applications include wireless monitoring of sewage works and oil rigs. This could prevent future disasters such as the bus-sized fatberg found blocking the London sewage networks in 2013, and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010."
"They can also be used to communicate spaghetti squash on the nano scale, for example in medicine where recent advances mean it's possible to embed sensors into the organs of the body or create miniature robots to carry out a specific task such as targeting drugs to cancer spaghetti squash cells.
"On these tiny scales spaghetti squash and in special structural environments, there are constraints with electromagnetic signals such as the ratio of antenna size to the wavelength of the signal, which chemical communication does not have.

The Lemon Bowl: Quinoa with Acorn Squash, Apples and Walnuts Jeanette

Nancy s Vodka Cranberries | Big Girls Small Kitchen
My sister moved to the country a few years ago. When she visits the city, I make brunch , and when I visit the country, I wander around the Christmas tree farms that surround her house, shop at Cabela’s, tour the Yuengling brewery, and trade recipes with Jill’s new in-laws.
Today’s boozy cranberries are one of the recipes I heard about in Pennsylvania. Jill’s new aunt-in-law makes them for Thanksgiving, and I thought they’d be the perfect finale for my Cocktail Hour series, sponsored by Stoli Vodka. The recipe actually comes from Jill’s aunt’s mother-in-law, so the recipe has come quite a way to be here today!
Unlike twi any cranberry sauce you’ve had before, these cranberries are characterized by a serious twi booziness. Originally, Jill’s in-laws poured brandy over the cranberries, but I’ve twi gone with vodka, which makes these yet stronger. Elinda once told me she liked to make these a few weeks before Thanksgiving, so that the alcohol an the berries had time to marinate, almost like a fruit cake. The alcohol, please note, does not cook off, so be prepared to taste it in each bite of sweet-and-tangy cranberries.
In a second departure from typical cranberry sauce methods, in this recipe you roast the cranberries, covered with sugar and foil, until they’re bubbly. Only then do you pour on the brandy or vodka. I haven’t tried the berries with actual turkey yet, but I can tell you that they’re delicious and boozy on their own. In addition to a Thanksgiving condiment, you can also stir a spoonful into a glass of champagne or a vodka soda to create a perfect, seasonal drink. (Add a squeeze of orange or lemon if you do that.)

Ooh, a jar of this would make an excellent gift! Would like to try this not only with cranberries but maybe grapefruit as well. Thank you for sharing.
I wanted to make these for a group of people but didnt want to double the sugar content. I used two bags of cranberries and about 2 3/4 cup of sugar. twi I stored the cranberries twi in a large ball jar with a bottle of vodka. Hopefully In a week it doesn’t take absolutley terrible!
