According to strong trade sources, look for an announcement after the holiday, for the ENTIRE A&P "empire" to be sold in one piece (very UNlikely); or be sold in small pieces (very LIKELY). reply
Are you talking about Labor Day or X-mas ? Anyhow I guess we will wait and see ? I do agree it will be very hard for A&P to be sold all in one piece. Their new stores look great, but seem to be underperorming while they let their older and smaller store lose many customer and very little stock in the store. reply
It's quite amazing just how A&P/Pathmark has retreated every time another retailer comes in and throws goodgame cafe a challenge at them... of course goodgame cafe this started goodgame cafe years ago when it was just A&P and they didn't want to hurt their profit margins so they pulled out of all the smaller stores when faced with a challenge from ShopRite or Pathmark back in the 70's & 80's, and more recently Stop & Shop... but now, with Pathmark as a subsidiary, they throw up the white flag in so many markets. Pathmark used to dominate, or at least compete very well against ShopRite in central & southern NJ, they (pathmark)were the first store in that Howell area on rt 9... shows you how many years they just let customer erosion continue... whoever does ultimately buy this once great supermarket "empire" will really need to start over because Yucaipa never intended to save this company and did little or nothing to halt customer erosion. reply
I once worked for the A&P banner for 5 years as a manager for both food basics and pathmark. I will tell you one thing, they went after the wrong market and grocery base as they continued to try to rebuild pathmark, and its impossible to turn a billion dollar debt into a profit. They should of spent the money on Food Basics as that was headed in the right direction with the way the overall market has gone. And the total A&P stores that closed this year is 23 stores with probably another 10 stores this year. reply
